Intent

At Ryders Green Primary School, our science curriculum is designed to give every child a secure understanding of key concepts in materials, animals, plants, space and forces. Children are encouraged to explore, observe, compare, test and look for patterns, helping them to think scientifically and develop curiosity about the world. As they move through the school, pupils build confidence and independence, growing into young scientists with the skills to question, investigate and explain their ideas. We aim to nurture a lasting enthusiasm for science by making learning practical, engaging and meaningful. This foundation equips our children to understand the importance of science in everyday life and its role in shaping their future.

Implementation

Science at Ryders Green is carefully planned and taught ensuring full curriculum coverage and clear progression across year groups. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners and designed to be practical, engaging and challenging.

Children are encouraged to ask their own questions and explore answers through investigation, problem solving and real-life contexts. Teachers model scientific processes, demonstrate how to use equipment, and provide opportunities to apply scientific skills across different topics. New vocabulary and concepts are introduced with clarity and revisited regularly to strengthen understanding.

Learning is further enriched through outdoor experiences, cross-curricular links and workshops with experts. Assessment is ongoing and informs planning, helping us to identify gaps and provide support so every child can succeed.

Impact

The impact of our science curriculum is that children leave Ryders Green with secure knowledge, confidence and curiosity. They are able to use equipment accurately, design and carry out investigations, and apply scientific vocabulary to explain their findings.

Pupils enjoy their science lessons, see themselves as scientists, and recognise the role science plays in the wider world. Most importantly, they are equipped with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in a future shaped by science and technology, with the aspiration to pursue STEM careers.
