At Ryders Green, we strive to give every child, every opportunity, at their one chance in primary school.
At Ryders Green Primary School, our French curriculum aims to spark pupils’ interest in learning another language in an enjoyable and stimulating way. We focus on building confidence, creativity, and curiosity about language, helping children to understand and respond to spoken and written French. Pupils are encouraged to explore vocabulary, sentence structures, pronunciation, and grammar, while developing an appreciation of communication and culture in another language.
French is taught across Key Stage Two in line with the National Curriculum. Pupils engage in listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities that progressively build skills. They explore sounds and patterns through songs, rhymes, and spoken practice, engage in conversations, ask and answer questions, and express opinions. Pupils develop vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure, practice reading and writing, and enjoy stories, poems, and songs in French. Lessons are interactive, revisited regularly to ensure retention, and include opportunities to apply skills independently and in different contexts.
The impact of the French curriculum is evident in pupils’ confidence and independence in using another language. They can understand and respond to spoken and written French, engage in conversations, express ideas clearly, and apply grammar and vocabulary accurately. Assessment through observation, written work, pupil voice, learning walks, and moderation ensures knowledge and skills are retained and progression is made. Pupils leave Key Stage Two ready to continue learning languages with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a strong foundation in communication.
